KX3 Portable Radio

I have my old IC-7000 which I can use in the car along with a Tarheel "screwdriver" antenna, but decided that an Elecraft KX3 portable radio might be more fun.

It covers 160m to 6m out of the box, and I added the 2m transverter option to it. I also added internal batteries, which doesn't give long on transmit, but is useful for listening.

I added the end panels and plastic cover from gemproducts.com, which do a good job of protecting the radio and making it a tiny bit more waterproof from a few raindrops. A cover for the unused port for the CW key finishes off the additions.

A Buddipole antenna works well with this on the higher bands. With the lower power, anything below 20m really needs a more efficient antenna. A wire antenna strung as high as you can get it works fine. The built-in ATU really does work very well.
